Knowing when to fully commit to entrepreneurship is a deeply personal moment. It wasn’t an overnight decision for me — instead, it was a series of realizations that added up over time.
It started in 2015 when I innocently opened Google and randomly chose a platform to start a blog. My first post was a declaration to share my entire personal finance journey with everyone on the internet—and so I did.
Fast-forward nearly a decade, and I now run Mixed Up Money, cohost the podcast Money Feels, and have published two finance books. Today, I run my own business full-time, helping others improve their relationship with money. I’m also pursuing my master’s in counselling psychology to become a financial therapist. It’s been an incredible journey, but knowing when to switch to full-time entrepreneurship was a crucial turning point.
So, in 2023, I actually started documenting everything in a note on my phone titled “Signs I’m meant to quit my job.” These signs were everywhere, from my friend joking that our car rides felt like therapy sessions to my followers offering me practicum spots at their practices. The writing was on the wall.
My passion for my full-time job started fading, and when my boss asked me what my goals were for the next six months, I had no answer. I wasn’t passionate about that work anymore. At the same time, I found myself deeply engaged in books like What Happened to You?, getting excited about future learning and how I could apply it to my business. I learned that real self-care means working from the inside out — taking one step at a time, not burning everything down and starting over.
Then, there was the shift in my finances. I realized I had more consistent income than I thought, and that helped me overcome the fear of not having enough. I met with my advisor at ATB, who helped me organize everything, from opening business accounts to mapping out my financial possibilities. That meeting removed my final hesitation. With my finances in check and my vision crystal clear, I knew it was time.
It wasn’t just about the money or the freedom to control my own time. It was about recognizing that my passion was helping others and using my creativity in meaningful ways. So, I set a deadline. I quit my job and went all in.
The day I logged out of my full-time job for the last time was a moment of profound relief. I could finally breathe deeply and focus entirely on my business. This past year has been my most successful yet. I’m not just out-earning my old salary — I feel more stable because I have control over how much I work, earn, and the direction of my business. The fears that once held me back no longer define my decisions.
If you’re thinking about leaping into full-time entrepreneurship, know that it’s a personal journey. For me, the “switching point” became clear through small signs and powerful realizations. And if you’re looking for support, switching your business banking to ATB can make all the difference. Right now, they’re offering up to $1,000* to help fuel your journey.
Nearly one year later, I’m celebrating not just surviving but thriving. Running my own business has been the most empowering decision of my life, and I’m excited for what the future holds.
