Pumpkin production in Canada

From jack-o'-lanterns to patches to pies, pumpkins are fun, nutritious and delicious.

If you are out trick-or-treating tonight and want to impress people with your knowledge of pumpkin production in Canada, this Owl is for you!

In 2022, about 87,000 metric tonnes of fresh pumpkin was produced in Canada with a farm gate value of just under $37 million.

When it comes to pumpkin, Alberta is no slouch, but Ontario “squashes” the competition at 71% of Canada’s total production by weight and 63% of the farm gate value.

Alberta produced 5% of Canada’s pumpkin tonnage in 2022 and 6% of the farm gate value.

At 4,000 tonnes and $2.2 million, last year’s numbers were the highest on record for Alberta (the data series goes back to 2007).

China is the world’s largest producer at 7.4 million tonnes in 2021 or about 24% of total global production of pumpkins, squash and gourds.
