Tight supply has pushed the price of cattle in Alberta to highs not seen since 2015.
New data from Statistics Canada show that the provincial price of cattle for feeding reached an average of $225.01 per hundredweight in March.
This was 48% higher than the previous March. The highest monthly price on record was set in April 2015 when it hit $240.20.
At $193.38 per hundredweight in March, the average price of cattle for slaughter was 27% higher than 12 months earlier, just topping the previous record of $193.01 set in May 2015.
While still high compared to their five-year averages, the prices of major Alberta crops have pulled back from the records set in June of last year.
The average price of wheat in Alberta in March 2023 was 18% lower than in June 2022 while canola was down by 24%.
Barley has seen less of a decline, but was still down by 4% compared to June 2022.
