After four consecutive pullbacks, the value of Alberta’s merchandise exports in January jumped $474 million (+3.1%) above its December 2022 level.

Farm, fishing and intermediate food product exports grew $250 million (+24.3%) and was alone responsible for over half the aggregate monthly increase.

Despite natural gas prices being down significantly in January, energy export revenues managed to rise by $161 million (+1.4%) and partially cushioned losses incurred in the previous month.

Activity in Alberta was more upbeat relative to last year’s levels. The value of the province’s merchandise exports stood $1.2 billion (+8.3%) above January 2022.

National export revenues were up by $1.3 billion (+2.2%), as gains in Ontario (+6.9%) and Alberta (+3.1%) largely offset declines in Quebec (-11.6%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (-12.6%).
