For the third quarter in a row, Alberta has gained residents from other parts of the country.

Over the first three months of 2022, 5,351 more people moved to Alberta from other parts of Canada than vice versa, up from 3,451 residents the previous quarter.

While there are many reasons people move into and out of a province, improved economic conditions in Alberta are likely a key factor in the recent turnaround in net interprovincial migration.

Nine provinces and territories gained residents from other parts of the country in the first quarter of 2022. Alberta gained the most followed by British Columbia (+3,051), Nova Scotia (+2,419) and New Brunswick (+2,113).

Ontario lost the most residents on a net  basis (-11, 566) followed by Manitoba (-2,229), Saskatchewan (-1,358) and the Northwest Territories (-145).

With Alberta’s economy growing faster than most of the other provinces, positive net interprovincial migration is likely to continue throughout 2022.
