Chart of the Week
Chart of the Week: Paused - GDP in Canada
Hot off the digital press this morning comes the national GDP report for August alongside a preliminary reading for September. Economic activity stalled in August, with a majority of industries contracting. An improvement in retail and manufacturing activity was overshadowed by pullbacks in public administration and wholesale trade.
More importantly, real GDP growth in the third quarter is tracking around 1.3% (annualized), less than half the Q2 pace and falling below the Bank of Canada's latest estimate of 2.0%. Today’s report aligns with our September forecast for annual growth to reach roughly 0.9% for this year.
Currently stalled economic activity reinforces the case for the Bank of Canada to proceed carefully following this week's rate increase.
